Understanding Identity at the Intersection of Diverse Communities: Alternative school typologies from the ground up.

Education
Alexandra - Marlboro Gardens, Johannesburg, Gauteng, ZA

This project explores how architecture can respond to identity, inequality and education at the threshold between Alexandra and Marlboro Gardens in Johannesburg. Centred on the “M.A Intersect,” the project arises from participatory fieldwork and examines how learning already takes place within the community.

The design proposes a phased, adaptable framework that looks to formalise existing methods of learning. Built with local materials and shaped by community governance, it addresses overcrowding, access and safety while creating opportunities for making, gathering and stewardship.

The study demonstrates that sustainable architecture emerges through community resilience and adaptive frameworks, offering both a context-specific response and a transferable model for inclusive educational and social infrastructure.
