Mnemonic as a notion of that which aids in the creation of memories is important to the research in this document. Architecture as mnemonic is relatable to other aspects and devices with mnemonic value. Memory is therefore an important aspect of architecture and the built world. Not only do we remember through spatial interactions, we also experience spaces which lead to us creating new memories.

My interpretation of the theme led to exploring various definitions and links to other issues of identity, memory and cultural significance. As such I decided that I wanted to create a community center which caters to a diverse group of peoples from different backgrounds, and coming with different views and beliefs to others. The intention is to promote education and understanding of other cultural groups or religions and their beliefs and practices. I believe that through understanding will come respect and from respect can come dialogue and friendship with a goal of helping to promote peace.

The site is significant with the synagogue and ritual bath, and both are circular structures, the synagogue is topped with a dome which is seen in a variety of religious and cultural structures. I wanted to connect back to the site and therefore have chosen to use facebrick on the exterior facades, and I have also decided to make use of curves and circular forms as well as domes and interesting light wells.

I believe that this center can work as an extension of the current Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Center on the site which can accommodate smaller crowds in a small auditorium and hall. There is also already a kosher kitchen in this center and as such the new kitchen would not necessarily be used for kosher food preparation.

Ultimately the complex is aimed at promoting interfaith and interculture dialogue and discussion. Thus the center is called the Johannesburg Interculture Center.
