A Conservationist Menagerie: Redefining The Johannesburg Zoo Through A Multi-Species Educational Facility

This architectural project addresses the human-wildlife conflict and its impact on captive, injured, and displaced animals, aiming to improve their welfare. Historically, humans have dominated and exploited wildlife, creating a hierarchical power dynamic that has caused a significant knowledge gap and poor understanding of animal welfare. This research focuses on the Johannesburg Zoo, which has faced criticism for its inadequate habitats and diminished educational value, making it an ideal site to explore multispecies relationships. Inspired by Daniel Metcalfe’s “Multispecies Design,” the project proposes a new zoo model that shifts the power dynamic, fostering respectful, inclusive interactions between humans, wildlife, and nature. The goal is to promote kinship and coexistence, reducing conflict and enhancing wildlife welfare. This exploratory research uses photography, mapping, and research tabulations to reimagine wildlife habitats in urban environments. Film and comic-like graphics will illustrate a utopian design for future wildlife spaces, enabling reconciliation between humans and animals.
