E//Sports: an alternative tertiary education model as a form of urban regeneration

This research investigates the establishment of an Esports Institute in Rosebank, as an innovative model for higher education focused on urban regeneration and economic development. The institute aims to harness the rising popularity of competitive gaming and content creation to address the regional shortage of professional players and creators. Through structured programs, it seeks to connect local talent with global opportunities, cultivating a skilled workforce in South Africa’s emerging Esports landscape.
Rosebank offers numerous advantages of mixed-use developments and excellent accessibility, making it an ideal location for the institute. The facility will provide a range of programs, from basic technology setup for events to advanced gaming training and Esports management. The stadium will function as a hub for practice and public events. The research concludes that the Esports Institute has the potential to drive urban regeneration by creating jobs, fostering community engagement, and promoting socio-economic transforming the region's economic landscape.
