Social Nex[us]:Reimagining public life and cohesion in Windhoek west through empowering student entrepreneurs and their side hustles
This master's thesis addresses the lack of community and public facilities in Windhoek West, a mixed-use suburb of Namibia’s capital. The absence of public spaces weakens social cohesion and fragments the social fabric. Reimagining the community center as a "nexus" connecting people, the research explores public building typologies as social connectors. Trade centers, once used for control during colonial rule, were also crucial for economic and social exchange.
Namibia's retail landscape, dominated by multinational corporations, marginalizes local traders. This research emphasizes supporting small-scale entrepreneurs. Urban analysis reveals a strong entrepreneurial presence among students and young professionals in Windhoek West. In response, the proposed Nex[us] includes a market, production area, and urban park to address the need for public spaces and economic opportunities.
Situated strategically, the Nex[us] connects divided zones of activity, balancing flexible spaces for local traders and fostering public interaction, thereby strengthening social cohesion.
