Moving Mbombela: A multi-modal transportation hub reconnecting South Africa's Lowveld
This thesis investigates the transformative potential of a multi-modal transportation hub in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, to enhance connectivity, address social injustices, and support eco-tourism. Despite its strategic location in the Lowveld, Mbombela suffers from poor infrastructure and limited transportation access, hindering regional potential.
The proposed hub combines bus and train terminals with mixed-use spaces, including retail, government facilities, restaurants, and informal trading zones, creating a dynamic and interconnected urban environment. The design integrates parametricism and Africanism, creating an architectural language that resonates with local culture while embracing innovative principles. Accessibility and inclusivity are prioritised, positioning the hub as a catalyst for community engagement, economic empowerment, and cultural exchange.
Additionally, the thesis reimagines the synergy between transportation and commemoration, challenging traditional notions of monuments. The project envisions infrastructure that supports movement and development while serving as a powerful tool for remembrance and cultural continuity.
