Sensory Architecture: What Impact does the architectural layout of a scared area have on the spiritual encounters of those who visit it?
This thesis explores the integration of sensory experiences within the architectural design of a Lutheran church situated in the vibrant urban landscape of Newtown, Johannesburg. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of both Lutheran traditions and the dynamic context of Johannesburg, the design aims to engage the congregation’s senses in a profound spiritual journey. Through an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating principles of psychology, anthropology, and architectural theory, the thesis investigates how spatial configurations, materiality, lighting, acoustics, and ritualistic elements can evoke a multisensory experience conducive to worship and contemplation. The design proposal seeks to foster a sense of community, connection, and transcendence, while also responding sensitively to the social and environmental context of Newtown. By reimagining the traditional notion of church architecture through a sensory lens, this thesis contributes to the discourse on contemporary religious spaces and their potential to enrich human experience in an increasingly urbanized world.
