Architecture of Mist: A Sacred Scents Cultural Preservation through A Traditional Incense Hub in the Sasong Village, Tibet, China

This thesis, An Architecture of Mist for Intervention, explores a site in Southeast Tibet, Sasong Village, known for its sacred scents and fog. The village’s ancient incense craftsmanship is endangered, threatening its cultural survival. The project aims to revitalize this tradition, integrating it into the core of Tibetan culture through architecture. By using transitional spaces, the design redefines spatial paradigms, balancing tradition with modernity. It emphasizes the “in-betweens”—spaces between nature and human intervention, past and present, monumental and intimate. Addressing challenges like environmental degradation and cultural erosion, the thesis proposes an Architecture of Mist—a Traditional Incense Hub that fosters sustainable development while preserving Tibet’s heritage. The design aims to create human-scale structures that harmonize with the landscape and preserve the rich Tibetan incense-making tradition for future generations.
