Developing Perspectives on Uncomfortable Truths
I am an Urban and Regional Planning Honours student with a background in TV and outdoor advertising. Growing up, my family travelled a great deal in the course of work. These experiences have instilled in me a love of cities and places, and an interest in different cultures and peoples. My skillsets span urban design, urban development, mapping and visual communication. My research interests include urban agriculture, sustainable urban development, and meaningful placemaking. I enjoy ‘going walkabout’ in various towns and cities, and poring over antique maps. My career path change was inspired by consultation work completed with various town planners whilst working in outdoor advertising and ultimately having a greater interest in working in an industry that has the ability to create more meaningful changes for everyday citizens and society. The work completed for the course ‘Politics of Housing and Planning’ has largely involved the exploration of different identities, competing interests in urban space, documenting the COVID-19 Lockdown, and forming a perspective on how the forced confinement had vastly differing outcomes in South African communities. The course also focused on expanding an outlook on urban politics and development, in particular, looking at contemporary land and housing issues in Johannesburg.
