A Mixed-Use Building in Newtown
I am a third-year architectural student studying at Wits University. I am 20 years old and I live in Johannesburg. I appreciate the opportunity to present my work in this new medium. This design for a mixed-use building in Newtown was the final project in the second year of my Bachelor of Architectural Studies. The brief required us to design a housing unit for a mixed demographic, with programming to include standard residential units, live-work units, support services and retail and commercial spaces. The building is set within a public space, where flowing terraces create places of rest and pause. The conceptual approach taken towards the design of the public space was to create a place that would be open for different groups of people to congregate. The retail edge would activate the area at different times of the day, and a variety of programmes could be accommodated: enabling people to socialise, gym, rest, or play. This was achieved by manipulating the ground plane to create different levels within the public space.
