A Typology of Spatial Exchange Accommodating Mumbai's Hijra Community
As a first generation South African Indian, my perspectives have largely been shaped by space and identity; closely held by an Indian culture that was nested within a post-apartheid South African nationality. Growing up in a space realised through “separate development”, inspired the process of identity formulation and consequently the reconsideration of identity: a common manifestation of colonial influence. This identity reconsideration was the precursor to my research. The foundation theme of this research concerns the overlapping identity spectra of the Hijra community. The sex-worker and the demigod, I have identified as archetypes. The conservative ambience within this postcolonial community, provided an opportunity for testing seemingly contrasting programmes of sex-work and worship, in a combined programme within a functional architecture. The research project embodies the ideas of the contemporarily culturally-complex, in terms of liminal concepts through scripting semi-fictional realities and liminal space design.
