The Joint Building Contracts Committee Prize

awarded for ‘Small Office Practice’ in the Third Year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies

Museum of Johannesburg in Newtown

Merlin Love is an artist and architecture student, currently in the Bachelor of Architectural Studies with Honours programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. His current work investigates memory, history and embodied experience as they play out within, and reshape, the city, through illustration, animation and music. The Museum of Johannesburg derives its form from the mineral history of the area. Like a section of earth cut out and sloped back, it extends the central public green space and invites exploration into the depths of the museum. From the basement to the walkable green roof, histories, memories and artworks are illuminated from cut-outs, to shed light on that which is buried.
