Place and Gender Performed
I am a student of architecture at the University of Witwatersrand. I have been interested in exploring the role that architecture plays in society, with the constantly changing social perceptions or patterns of living. The connection between architecture and politics intrigues me, and the way in which this interaction might influence the lives of communities. The final design studio project for my Bachelor of Architectural Studies with Honours, explored Susana Torre’s theories. These are rooted in feminist theory but provide a definite connection with queer theory, enabling Torre to determine ways in which place and gender could be performed, while investigating feminist approaches to architecture. Gender is a phenomenon that is produced and reproduced all the time, therefore it is performative: “a performance that creates the illusion of sex” (Butler 2011). This concept translates to fluid and flexible buildings that are open to endless possibilities. It speaks to achieving the architectural integrity of a design while allowing for the design to grow with changing social patterns. This project is an attempt at accommodating the constantly changing patterns of dwelling in a completed architectural project. It is the consolidation of the formal integrity and fullness of a design, with the continually changing conditions of living or perceptions of society.
