A Live-Work Project in Newtown

I am in my third year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Wits. Luckily, I have made it to third year in one piece. I have a deep interest in architecture and I am hoping my studies in this field will develop me both as a person and as a critical thinker. The Live-Work project set in Newtown was one of our second-year briefs. The design was for a multistorey mixed-use building to accommodate residents, offering live/work units as well. This would enable residents to work from home, with studio spaces large enough to conduct day-to-day businesses. The building is placed within a public space, which formed an essential component of the design. The site is stepped and ramps were introduced to link the various levels, from the basement parking to the primary ground level with its public restaurant. The intention for this project was the creation of a built environment that would fit seamlessly into its context, and that would enhance the neighbourhood and contribute to the community life.
