Women’s Economic Advancement in Maputo
As a young, black woman I am very aware of some of the harsh realities in our society. For me, urban planning represents an opportunity to influence the spatial and policy changes that have an impact on the socio-political aspects of our lives. Most of my work has focused on issues of marginality, gender equality and the politics of land management. Maputo faces a multiplicity of urban problems like most cities in the global South. It faces exponential population growth that is not accompanied by the necessary economic and infrastructural development. The result is the urbanisation of poverty, vulnerability, unemployment, and multiple, interconnected mobility issues within the city. Our spatial development framework project focussed on spatial interventions that have the principles of womanised responsiveness and progressive social justice, as their foundation. We sought the enhancement of economic growth that would be inclusive of the informal sector, which is a major contributor to employment within the city, especially for the female population. Furthermore, we aimed to produce womanised transport and economic Spatialities, that would ensure women’s safety. Practically, this can be done through applying principles of placemaking and creating better connections throughout the city, to improve mobility and stimulate the commercial arteries, while creating an investment and development web.
“…to enhance economic growth that is inclusive of the informal sector, which is a major contributor to employment within the city, especially for the female population.”
