L Dlamini & R Makola (2020)
This exhibition showcases student work from the 2nd year Urban Design Studio for the Contemporary Design & Environmental Issues In South Africa course in the Urban & Regional Planning programme. The studio was run over 3 months and tasked the students to develop an urban design spatial diary of public space and urban typologies, that critically unpacks and questions the levels in which they facilitate or repress Black belonging and expression within them.
This part of the project asked students to graphically compare/contrast public space typologies in different neighbourhoods across South Africa using urban design vocabulary inspired by local languages, landscapes and cultures.
Upon completing their analysis, students were required to formulate a design concept for their chosen site and develop an Urban Design Framework (UDF) followed by a detailed design strategy and various Precinct level designs.
